Actor Charles Kimbrough, who starred opposite Candice Bergen in the CBS television series, “Murphy Brown,” has died at the age of 86. He was nominated for the Tony and Emmy Awards. In addition to his acting career, Kimbrough was also a producer.
During his ten-year run as Jim Dial on the CBS hit sitcom “Murphy Brown,” Kimbrough was nominated for an Emmy award for outstanding supporting actor in a comedy series for his performance in 1990. He reprised the role for three episodes in the 2018 reboot of the show.
As first reported by the New York Times, his death was confirmed by his son and agents to The Associated Press on Sunday afternoon. In a statement released by his agency, the actor said that he died in a hospital of natural causes.
It should be noted that Kimbrough’s first wife, actress Mary Jane (Wilson) Kimbrough, who died in 2007, divorced him in 1991 but they married in 2002, more than a decade after he divorced his first wife, actress Beth Howland who played Vera on TV sitcom Alice during the 1970s and ’80s.
In 1971, Kimbrough was nominated for the Tony award for his role as Steve in the Steven Sondheim musical “Company” and he played the role for many years in the New York theater scene. As a voice actor, James Kimbrough also appeared in Disney’s animated film “The Hunchback of Notre Dame” as a gargoyle named Victor.
